What It Means to Be a Youth Football Coach

Coaching youth football is both a privilege and a responsibility. Yes, it’s incredibly rewarding—watching young athletes grow in skill, confidence, and character throughout the season. But it also demands dedication, patience, and a clear sense of purpose.

As a coach, you're more than a play-caller. You're a teacher of proper and safe technique, a role model whose actions shape young minds, and a mentor helping kids develop life skills that go far beyond the field. Winning is great—but building character, resilience, and teamwork is what truly lasts.

Great youth coaches combine a solid understanding of football fundamentals with a genuine ability to connect with kids. They communicate clearly, lead with integrity, and create an environment where every player feels valued, safe, and supported.

Equally important is a coach’s role in fostering a respectful, unified team culture—on the field and in the stands. Coaches must model maturity and professionalism in all interactions and be supportive of AJSA, avoiding gossip, drama, or any behavior that stirs division among parents, volunteers, or staff. We’re here for the kids—and that shared focus matters.

When you step into this role, you’re committing to give your best—at every practice, every game, every interaction. And in return, you’ll help shape young athletes into better players and better people.

Join the AJSA Football Coaching Team

The Andover Junior Sports Association is proud to welcome enthusiastic, team-first youth coaches who are ready to make a real impact. At AJSA, we believe youth sports should be safe, fun, and enriching—where kids build confidence, develop character, and grow a true love for the game.

We're looking for coaches who lead with integrity, patience, and perspective. The best coaches don’t just teach plays—they teach life lessons. Our ideal volunteers are role models who understand that youth sports are about the kids, not personal agendas. If you're here to build up young athletes—not just chase wins—we want you on our team.

Through our partnership with USA Football and their League Excellence Program, AJSA holds its coaches to high standards and provides the tools and support needed to succeed.

Just as important, we expect our coaches to foster a positive culture that reflects AJSA’s values. That means staying solution-focused, avoiding gossip or negativity, and working in unity with other volunteers and families. A great coach lifts up their players—and helps uphold a supportive and respectful environment for everyone involved.

Sound like your kind of team? We’d love to have you on the field.
