PROGRAM INFO
Welcome to Andover Jr Football & Cheer
The Andover Jr Football & Cheer programs are part of the Andover Jr Sports Association. Our football program proudly participates in the Mid-State Football League. AJSA serves students attending Andover Public Schools from Pre-K/Kindergarten through 6th grade and provides age-appropriate opportunities through Flag Football, Rookie Tackle, Traditional Tackle Football, and Jr Cheer.
Our goal is to help young athletes learn the game, build confidence, develop fundamentals, and grow into their respective high school programs at Andover High School and Andover Central High School. Through football and cheer, athletes have the opportunity to support their teams, contribute to the game-day experience, and take pride in representing Andover.

JR CHEER PROGRAM

Families interested in Cheer can visit Andover Jr Cheer under the Programs tab for registration details, uniform information, practice expectations, schedules, and season updates.
Football Development Model
Andover Jr Football follows an age-appropriate progression inspired by USA Football’s Football Development Model, which teaches the game based on an athlete’s age, the skills being learned, and the type of football being played. This approach helps athletes learn the game, build confidence, and develop safely through Flag Football, Rookie Tackle, and Traditional Tackle.
Flag Football
Flag Football introduces younger athletes to the game in a fun, non-contact environment. Played on a smaller field with fewer players, Flag helps athletes learn basic football skills, spacing, movement, teamwork, and game concepts while building confidence and enjoying the sport.
Pre-K/Kindergarten and 1st/2nd Grade options available.
Rookie Tackle
Rookie Tackle is a modified, developmentally focused version of football designed to bridge the gap between Flag Football and full 11-player tackle football. In our league, Rookie Tackle is played 8-on-8 on a smaller field, with simplified rules and no special teams, giving athletes more opportunities for reps, skill development, and multi-position learning.
AJSA strongly encourages 2nd graders to participate in Rookie Tackle before moving into 3rd grade Traditional Tackle.
Traditional Tackle
Traditional Tackle Football begins in 3rd grade and continues through 6th grade. Players build on earlier fundamentals while learning more advanced offensive, defensive, and team concepts in preparation for their future high school programs.
Focus areas include safe tackling and blocking techniques, position fundamentals, football IQ, teamwork, toughness, and coachability.
Why Rookie Tackle Matters in 2nd Grade
While 1st/2nd Grade Flag Football is available, AJSA strongly encourages all 2nd grade athletes to participate in one year of Rookie Tackle before entering Traditional Tackle Football in 3rd grade.
Rookie Tackle is not simply “early tackle.” It is a scaled, developmentally focused step between Flag Football and full 11-player tackle football. The smaller field, 8-on-8 format, simplified rules, and no special teams create a more age-appropriate environment for young athletes to learn contact, spacing, blocking, tackling progression, assignments, and football fundamentals.
Rookie Tackle helps players build:
- A gradual introduction to contact
- More opportunities for reps and skill development
- A better understanding of offensive and defensive concepts
- Increased confidence and comfort in a tackle football setting
- The opportunity to grow alongside classmates and future teammates
Families who feel Flag Football is still the best fit for their 2nd grade athlete may choose that option, but we strongly encourage parents to consider Rookie Tackle as an important developmental step in their child’s football journey.
Practices
Organized practices begin in August, with the first practice date determined annually by AJSA and posted on the program calendar.
Practices are held at designated fields throughout the City of Andover. Exact practice times and locations are communicated by each team’s coach.
Typical practice schedules are:
• Pre-K/Kindergarten and 1st/2nd Grade Flag Football: usually two practices per week
• 1st/2nd Grade Rookie Tackle and 3rd–6th Grade Tackle Football: usually three practices per week until games begin
August practices are especially important. This is when teams are introduced to fundamentals, coaches evaluate players, and athletes begin learning offensive, defensive, and team concepts.
Families are encouraged to plan vacations before the start of August practices whenever possible, especially for Rookie Tackle and Traditional Tackle players. Jr Football Camp is offered for 4th through 6th grade athletes only. Families with eligible players can find full camp details by selecting Jr Football Camp under the About Us tab.
Games & Schedules
Game schedules are coordinated by the Mid-State Football League, with most schedules typically released around September 1st.
Teams generally play 6–8 regular season games on Saturdays, beginning with the first Saturday following Labor Day weekend.
Home games are hosted at Trojan Stadium or Jaguar Stadium in Andover. Away games may be played in communities throughout south-central Kansas, including Derby, Goddard, Maize, Hutchinson, Ark City, Bishop Carroll, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, and other league locations.
Parents are responsible for transporting athletes to and from all practices and games.
Attendance Expectations
Consistent attendance is important for player safety, team development, and overall program success.
Football is a team sport, and weekly preparation matters. The Mid-State Football League discourages players from missing practice during the week and then participating in that Saturday’s game. If a player misses practice during the week before a game, playing time or game participation may be limited or adjusted at the discretion of the coaching staff.
AJSA understands that families have other commitments. At the same time, regular attendance is expected so coaches can properly teach fundamentals, install team concepts, and prepare athletes for safe and meaningful game-day participation.
Team Placement
Player team assignments are based on the grade the athlete is enrolled in as of September 1st.
Requests to play up one grade are rarely granted and are reviewed by AJSA on a case-by-case basis. AJSA may consider the athlete’s size, athletic ability, prior football experience, coach input, teammate size and safety considerations, and roster needs in both grade levels.
Because play-up approvals can affect roster balance, player development, team placement, and future grade-level assignments, AJSA keeps athletes with their current grade whenever possible. Final approval of any play-up request rests solely with AJSA.
Team rosters are formed with consideration of grade level, the Andover Public School the athlete attends, and the feeder system leading toward Andover High School and Andover Central High School.
Equipment
For tackle football players, AJSA provides the following equipment as part of the registration fee:
• Helmet
• Shoulder pads
• Practice jersey
• Game jersey
• Practice pants
• Game pants
Players are responsible for providing their own:
• Mouth guard
• Socks
• Cleats
For safety, certification, warranty, insurance, and league rule compliance, players may only use equipment issued and fitted by AJSA. Personal helmets, shoulder pads, helmet visors, back plates, or other add-on equipment may not be used, purchased, installed, or attached to AJSA-issued equipment unless specifically approved by AJSA. Outside modifications can affect equipment fit, safety certification, manufacturer warranty, league eligibility, and insurance coverage.
Parent Involvement
Parent involvement is essential to the success of Andover Jr Football and Cheer.
Families with athletes participating in Cheer, Rookie Tackle, and Traditional Tackle are expected to help support home game operations through volunteer roles. Volunteers are also needed for events, fundraising activities, and other program needs throughout the season.
Home games require many moving parts, and parent support helps AJSA provide a safe, organized, and positive experience for athletes, families, officials, and visiting teams.
Parents are also expected to pick up athletes promptly after practices and games. Coaches and volunteers are responsible for supervising athletes during scheduled team activities, but families should make arrangements to ensure players are picked up on time at the conclusion of each event.
Our Program Goals
Andover Jr Sports Association is committed to developing hard-working, coachable, and confident student-athletes.
Our goal is to provide an organized, development-focused youth sports experience where every athlete has the opportunity to learn, grow, contribute, and develop pride in representing Andover.
While playing time, roles, and participation may vary based on attendance, preparation, safety, effort, and game-day situations, our programs are built around teaching fundamentals, developing confidence, encouraging teamwork, and helping young athletes grow as teammates and competitors.
We look forward to working with each family throughout the season and appreciate your support of Andover Jr Football & Cheer.
